• Keep a list of all items in the storage unit.
  • Prepare your unit by placing pallets, blocks of wood or cardboard on the floor under your items to minimize the possibility of water or moisture damage. Avoid using plastic as this can cause condensation to accumulate.
  • Consider whether or not you will need access to any of your items while they are in storage. Try to place those items near the front of the storage unit, and if possible, leave a walkway opening into the unit.
  • Label your boxes and arrange them in such a way that they can be easily read.
  • Place heaviest boxes on the bottom when stacking, and light, fragile, or otherwise crushable containers at the top.
  • Leave a small air space between the goods stored and the storage unit walls.
  • Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture.
  • Use a good quality lock on your storage unit door. Cheap locks will rust.
  • Insure your goods while in storage. Ask the manager about self -storage insurance at reasonable rates.
  • Leave appliance doors cracked open so that moisture does not build within. Place some charcoal briquettes in the refrigerator to absorb odors.
  • Do not store food - this can attract mice or other pests.
